Description

Josef Hospodka Bowl.

Park of selection of MCM art glass we are listing.

This is a Chribska of Czechoslovakia sommerso (cased) vase designed by Josef Hospodka .From the mid 1950s.

Josef Hospodka has become one of the pioneers of original blown glass. He applied old techniques, but found new shape and colour solutions corresponding to the modern concept of glass.

He was also the first pupil of Holeček’s studio at the School of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague to start working with metallurgical glass.

Metallurgical glass is characterised by its handmade process and unique properties.Produced by kiln-blowing around 1200 c where the glass solidifies but retains a nodular structure. This allows the creation of handmade glass that is both durable and visually distinct.

He sampled various colourways, mixing tones and allowing free flowing of one coloured glass into another.

As the director of the glassworks in Chřibská, he introduced the centrifugal casting method into production which moved the entire glass industry forward. The production of densely shaped glass in Chřibská did not fully start until 1956, when a new four-pan furnace was put into operation. Hospodka’s  massive and colourful vases made of metallurgical glass from the turn of the sixties won international awards, but were never produced on a large scale.
