Soft Cover

1998 Liverpool University Press.

Herbert Read (1893-1968),  acquired in his lifetime a considerable international reputation as a poet, an anarchist, a philosopher (of aesthetics), an art critic, and an historian of and, above all, a propagandist for modern art and design.Following his experience in WW1 and his study at Leeds University, he built up a dual career in literature and the visual arts during the 1920s and early-1930s, and by the late-1930s he was a figure of great cultural authority in Britain. In addition to the 17 substantial chapters in the book, the editor’s introduction gives an overview of Read’s life and work, reviews the current state of Read studies, and provides a commentary on the contributors’ essays.
