A piece of music which is being released to celebrate the return
of the replica of
Captain Cook’s ship the Endeavour.
Inspired by the remarkable story of the vessel and it’s crew, it is the most
recent work of
musician / composers Charles O’Connor and Paul Whittaker, and continues a theme
which they first
explored in their previous instrumental album "Angel on the Mantelpiece".
Traditional instruments such as concertina, fiddle and mandolin are used extensively,
but the
inclusion of such diverse elements as "tribal" drums, harp, and a guest appearance
by guitar virtuoso Martin
Simpson ensure that this is much more than a collection of folk songs or sea
shanties.
O’Connor and Whittaker both come from backgrounds in rock and pop music, with
such varied credits
as "Horslips" and Stock, Aitken and Waterman, but in recent years their collaboration
has led them towards
music for T.V. and radio ( Heart of the Country, Buoys and Girls, Rick Stein
etc.),
and film ( A Day at the Beach ).
The C.D. includes five pieces.........
1. Breaking Waves - 4m 13s
2. Lonorono - 5m 26s
3. Transit of Venus - 4m 58s
4. The Hurricane - 6m
5. Ice Blink - 4m 58
Tracks 2, 3 and 4 are from the forthcoming CD ‘THE SHELL’ which
will be available from mid July and can
be pre-ordered now. There are also plans for a major live performance, for which
the Endeavour will form
the ‘backdrop’. The probable line up of musicians for the event from includes
Steve Fletcher of the
"Penguin Cafe Orchestra", Mitt Gamon (whose work has featured on albums by Paul
Brady, Lol Creme and
Kevin Godley etc.), Chris Parkinson of the "House Band", Paul Smith (noted session
drummer of "Prefab
Sprout" fame), and the aforementioned Martin Simpson.
